I mis-read your first messages.  And I can't find Simon Munro as a casualty in WWI in 1915.   :(

I think this is him on CWGC Nell

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01bx/

....was a widow when she left the UK  with 5 kids

I'll presume you know this 'cos she married for the second time under her 1st married surname of Munro.

I find it hard to believe that a lady with 5 children leaves Scotland during World War One to go back to South Africa without a good reason.  Do you know what that was?

Also - have you found Simon Munro's Roll of Honour in Soldiers who Died in The Great War? Sometimes it lists additional information that is not on The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website?

Wendy,

Well as far as family rumour goes .......is that after hubby Simon was killed ,  Mary tried to put all 5 children in an orphanage,  and was stopped at the 11 th hour by Simon's brother Duncan,  so that is when she took them to SA with her,  i am guessing  ( ? )  that since she married there in 1901 she still may have had family there,  maybe her father  ???  any way i have spoken   to my aunt,  and she remembers her mum talking about how they went to school in SA ,  so am guessing (again)  that they were there for a while,  also my grandfather's army papers say he was schooled in SA

OK Craizi

What does it say for her place of Birth on 1901 Census? does it say "BS"? , 'cos I think maybe.....

Have you tried the Overseas Index for Births looking for her Birth?

If you think her Pa was resident in SA she could well have been born there.  If the family recorded her birth via the system she would be on that Index.

Sadly the only way I know to view it is to either ask SKS to look it up for you with their credits or it's pay to view via www.findmypast.com
