STAPLETON from Ireland?
« on: Wednesday 07 March 07 08:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Here I go again, trying to make headway into Ireland!
This time it's not my family but that of my uncle, who passed away last week.  I know he was very interested in his family history, and had this resolute belief that his STAPLETON lineage went back to Ireland somewhere (I believe in the North, but not sure).  I don't know that this belief was based on anything but hearsay...certainly I don't recall him ever doing any serious research through the extant records.

Anyway, what I would like to do in his memory is try to trace his STAPLETON family back to wherever they came from.  I have managed to find the following information on the New South Wales BDM index:

Herbert E STAPLETON m Linda G MCCASKIE in Sydney, 1929

Herbert born Sydney 1903

Herbert's parents were Everard R STAPLETON and Sarah L BROWN, m Sydney 1902

Everard R STAPLETON died Sydney 1911.  Parents shown as Everard and Mary L

The Everard name was given to Herbert's son (my uncle) as a middle name, and to my uncle's son also as a middle name.
I have so far been unable to find any of the STAPLETONs on online shipping records.  It appears that Everard R STAPLETON may have come out to Australia independent of his parents, sometime before 1902 when he married.

Interestingly there seems to be another STAPLETON family with the Everard name...Thomas and Martha STAPLETON emigrated to New Zealand in 1864 from Nottinghamshire, and had a son called Everard who made the journey with them.

Can anyone help with general or specific information about STAPLETONs in Ireland?

Thank you in advance

hi prue,
the headline on your post caught my eye because although  I
don't know any stapletons myself my late mother mentioned the name
'jock stapleton' many times in connection to her brother who died aged
29 in 1938.she said he or his father were from scotland originally.
I have a photo of a football team taken in Dublin  and I know one of them is 'jock'
this photo was taken either late 1920s or early to mid 1930s.
its  A4 sized so the file size would be too large to post on here.
my mam also claimed he was the grandfather of a player who
played with the ireland soccer team in the 80s'.
wonder if they're connected  to your uncles family  in some way.

hi prue, who knows is right, but then stranger things have
happened and maybe some of your uncles stapletons
may have been born in dublin.its not a common name.
the football team were mostly from the liberties area of dublin.
football in pic' has 'st.view' wrote on it.
well here goes, hope the size is ok,if not I'll try to modify it.

Hi Anne,
Well not sure if it's wishful thinking but there does look to be some family resemblance there...I will dig out a pic of uncle at the same age and see...your fellow Jock would be about the age of uncle's father in that picture.

Stapletons is a good Tipperary name and is very popular here.
I even work with one. The most popular bread here in Tipperary is Stapletons bread.

Hi enfield  :D
Ahh...that's interesting to know.  And I know uncle would have loved that there is a Stapletons Bread - he was a great one for food!  ;D
Thanks for your post  :)

P.S.  Would you know whether "Everard" is a common name over there, in relation to Stapletons?
