Where is Caulfieldhill, Canonbie?
« on: Thursday 08 March 07 21:55 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help identify this place, it is mentioned on a headstone in Canonbie churchyard. The transcription reads:

In memory of Margaret Byers spouse to Samuel Beattie who perished at Caulfieldhill April 8 1826 aged 27 years.

I can't find any trace of this - even looked on an old maps site.

Any ideas? ???
Beattie, Beveridge, Carson, Davidson, Hounam, Johnston,  Purdon, Rae, Stevenson, - Scotland.  Brown, Bulman, Cooke, Harding, Meyers, Osborne, Routledge - England

Might it now be marked as Calfield?  There is a Calfield Rig (which is actually 319 metres high) just to the west of Langholm.

The 1881 census has three households with Caulfield in the name - the farmhouse itself and two farm cottages.  The enumerators "walk" has Hallcrofts and Becks Farm in close proximity (adjacent pages), both are still marked on the OS map, so this may be the place.
