Thomas Forde - Boer war?
« on: Saturday 10 March 07 15:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My grandfather served in the Boer War, and WW1.  I really think he changed his name after leaving the army for whatever reason (married to someone else?) when he married my grandmother (no record of their marriage in the GRO).  No record of him in the regiment he said he was in (Coldstream Guards, 2nd batallion)

Very elusive, and annoying

Does anybody have a list of soldiers serving in the Boer war, and could there be a name similar to Thomas Forde?  Oh he also said he had the DCM and the MM. (doubtful)  I'm waiting for the Fs to come up in the pension records on Ancestry, he had a £1 a week pension until he died.  He got it for Neurasthenia, and he lost a finger and a toe, and had shrapnel in his head.

Most of it I believe, but as there is no match anywhere for his name, and the dubious marriage circumstances, I definitely think he had an alias.  We don't have his army number or medals, only a small bible and a book about gentlemanly behaviour in those days?????
