Census Confusion
« on: Saturday 10 March 07 17:25 GMT (UK) »
OK I found this census http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=6036928

so how come George Howard is a son in law when Joseph Howard is the head?  Is there something I have missed or has the census person got it wrong?

Hi tigces

"Son in Law" was often used in earlier years to mean grandson, but it is equally possible that George married a cousin of the same name who was Joseph's daughter - not uncommon in a small community.

Looking at the image, the grandson is down as son in law (which is a bit odd) and then George is 'son' and the 'in law' is dittoed from above. My first thought is that it's simply a mistake ...

Edit: and indeed he's simply Joseph's son in 1871...

Thanks for your help.  It will be help greatly for future research and if I am lucky enough to see son in law, step son and presumley father in law and step father - as long as it tallys with the other censuses I might have their granddad.
