death in Kendal
« on: Sunday 11 March 07 07:17 GMT (UK) »
Fanny/Frances WILLIS's death was registered in the first quarter of 1907 in Kendal.  She was 100 years of age.  I believe she was living in Burton-in-Kendal at the time.

Although she was not native to the area, and only came there in her late 80s or early 90s, I was hoping that perhaps a local newspaper might have carried an obituary, because of her age being noteworthy.

I haven't ordered her death cert, so I don't know the exact date.  But I wondered if there was anyone who had access to whatever local newspaper existed who might be willing to look it up if I had the date, or if I didn't.

Thanks for reading.

The Westmorland Gazette, based in Kendal, may well have covered this. I am fairly sure it existed at the time. It may be worth contacting them to see if they have it in their archives. The web site is:

www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk

They have an online archive for more recent events but you will probably have to email them with the details for this one.

Good Luck,

Jen

Thank you!

I looked for the Westmoreland Gazette but it doesn't seem to go back that far, according to the link to Cumbria newspapers found here:
http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/localstudies/default.asp

Perhaps the Kendal Mercury and Times which, according to the above site, is available at several locations, including the Westmoreland GAzette office - all several thousand miles from me, of course!

It looks to me as if the Kendal library only holds Gazette records from 1918 but the newspaper itself is much older than that and I still think they will have an archive at the offices in Kendal. If you look at the website ( address on previous posting) there is a contact link. Every week, there are snippets of news from 50, 100 and 150 years ago - there must be an archive somewhere.

If that doesn't work, let me know and I can try to get into the offices some time soon.

Cheers'

Jen

I have sent of an email inquiry to some at the Westmorland Gazette.  The website doesn't make it entirely clear who the best person would be to contact for this purpose, but I have asked them to pass it on to the right person, if it's not them.

We'll see what happens!

Thanks for the info.

I received a reply from the Westmorland Gazette saying that they only have bound print copies, which are not photocopiable.  She did not say what years they cover, although I had given the dates I was interested in.
She referred me to Kendal library microfilm.  However, as we know, it doesn't go back that far.
I will ask her if her hard copies go back that far.

Visited Kendal Local Studies on Saturday and noted that copies of the Westmorland Gazette and Kendal Advertiser are available on microfilm from 23 May 1818.

If your query is still outstanding and you can obtain the actual dates, I shall have a look for you.

Regards

Chris
