« on: Friday 26 November 04 16:06 GMT (UK) »
1901 Census has Martha Jane Wells listed as inmate at  St Mary's House, in the Parish of St.Mary the Virgin in I believe Stone Kent.
Can anyone provide more information about this institution. Martha Jane Wells is a great aunt  who's past is cloudy .

Thank you
Ray Wells

hello raywells , have been in contact with john wells, he has been asking if anyone knows your e mail address.     my grandmother was martha jane wells born dorset 1878    registered southampton 1880,  she married my grandfather  francis sutton in 1914. they lived in farnborough , kent and had ten children, my mother was the youngest, martha .sadly died in 1955.  I am very curious as to why she was placed in an orphanage at the age of five, and also spent time in st mary's house around 1901, if you have any more information I would be very grateful. also i believe she attended  the dorset girls industrial school around 1891. regards dinky10113

Hi Ray and Dinky

I have just found a book about "St Mary's House" in Stone.  Although written a little before the time Martha was there it looks a little gem (I've yet to read all of it) http://www.archive.org/stream/twentythreeyears00nokeuoft
