McIldowie/Muldoon
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 12:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I have an ancestor who is listed on various certificates (birth/marriage of children and death) sometimes as McIldowie sometimes as Muldoon.  I know sometimes names can be misheard or misspelt but these two names don't even sound the same.  Would anyone know why the lady is listed with two different surnames or is there a connection between the two surnames ?

Thanks
Fiona

Hi Floss,
Could she have married more than once?
My great grandmother was born Kate Fitzgerald; she married a Farrell; after a short time as a widow, she married a Moher.Moher died after a few years however and Kate was a widow again.
So, sometimes she is seen as Kate Farrell, sometimes as Kate Moher; and her Farrell children are described as Moher in one of the censuses. And her death cert describes her as Kate Farrell , when one would expect to see Kate Moher, as he was the last person she was married to (unless of course I unearth more marriages in her later years!!)
So I'd say the most likely explanation for your conundrum is something to do with her marriages, widowhood, etc etc.
Or could be totally wrong and someone did indeed have a very bad hearing day and mixed up the names (!)

Good luck,
Mags

Hi Mags

Thanks for the reply. I think it might be worth my while looking at what you suggested, I never thought she might have married before.  She was born around 1867 and married into my McIlduff line about 1889. Listed below are all the certificates I have (from Scotlands People , moved to Glasgow about 1891)

1892 birth cert of daughter Mary Jane McIldowie
1905 death cert of daughter Mary Jane McIldowie
1915 marriage cert of daughter Mary Jane Muldoon
1916 marriage cert of son Mary Jane Muldoon
1918 marriage cert of daughter Mary Jane Muldoon
1920 death cert of son Mary Jane Muldoon
Her own death cert Mary Jane Muldoon (parents listed as Muldoon)

Thanks again

Fiona
