scarlet's mill farm cowden
« on: Thursday 15 March 07 06:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Can anyone from the Cowden or Holtye area please tell me if Scarlet's Mill farm still exists. My Great - Great Grandfather is listed in the 1901 census as living there. I have a postcard depicting the farm buildings around that time from my Grandmother, who remembered being there as a little girl. Thank you for any help or information.

Hi there,

If you have a look at MultiMap, enter Cowden and then zoom in you will see an area called "Scarletts", looks like something may still be there! Hopefully someone will be able to investigate further for you.

I hope this information is of interest to you, three years on from your original post

We have recently purchased Scarletts at Cowden.  It is in very poor condition and requires a huge amount of work to restore.

Over the years, the farm and its land has been sold off and so it is in a number of ownerships nowadays.

The old Scarletts mill and the mill cottage were unfortunately washed away in the bad flooding of September 1958, when the lake dam was breached.  Now the property is overrun with woodland and brambles, but it is extremely beautiful, which is why we bought it.

I would be very interested to see the photo you have; I have one that shows the old oast house in the foreground, and a couple of horses and carts, from around the same time

Hello

Very interesting that you are going to be living at Scarletts Mill.  I will send the image to you.  Please be patient for a week or two because we are moving house and all is packed up.  My relative was Henry Chadwell and I have recently received a wonderful photo of him sitting, looking very content, on the property somewhere.  Thanks for responding and best to you in your new home.

Wow - I have just Googled scarlett's farm to send a link to someone, and came across this thread. My ancestor is also Henry Chadwell, and I have a photograph of him sitting in front of Scarlett's farm too. I'd love to hear from you!

Just thought I'd add that I'm also really interested in hearing from the new owner(s) of Scarletts farm. I drove up to see it a couple of years ago and have some photos from the roadside, but would love to have a proper look. Many Thanks

Hi,
I have fond memories of Scarlet's Farm from about 1945. My Uncle and Aunt lived in the Cottage next to the Water Mill which was swept away in the flood of 1958. Uncle Achurst worked for the Farm owner which changed hands several times during his employment. My main memories were of the young Major who bought it about 1945. He was a very generous man. At Christmas 1946 I was invited to the Farm with my Mother and Father. There was a big log fire burning in the long front room of the farm building and a big bowl of punch for everyone to share. Everyone received a Christmas gift which in 1946 was a rarity, toys were unobtainable in UK. I received a wind up elephant which I owned for quite few years.
I remember my Uncle going round the workers cottages and the farm early on the Xmas morning playing his piano accordion. The cottage had no electric light but I think it had running water., but an outside toilet I believe.
Fortunately, my Uncle and Aunt moved into the cottage further up the lane to the top road so missed being swept away in the flood. I think these cottages had electric light.
I used to go to work with my Uncle and rode on the tractor with him when he was doing the harvest and ploughing.
I watched him do the milking by hand, helped or hindered him doing the fencing repairs, drive the cows to milking,
mucking out, stooping the corn sheaves after the binder had failed to tie them; a wonderful outdoor existence.
In 1946 I would have been 4 years old.
It is wonderful that Scarlett's is being restored, I seem to remember that it was Jacobean. The fireplace in the long drawing room would take a log of maybe five foot length.
My uncle died about 1959 and sadly my Auntie in about 1960..The memories of this period of my life have stayed with me for ever, I probably saw the end of an era which had not changed much for Centuries, now just memories.
I can remember playing in the old mill with it's water wheel, the oast house and playing in a garden which was adjacent to the cottage beneath the mill.
My Uncle and Auntie were presented with a book of excellent photos of Scarlett's farm which sadly are lost. When my Father died everything was lost.
I did a cycle ride down to Cowden about 1990 but sadly I didn't make myself known at the farm. I saw that the farm was abandoned which saddened me, so many memories.

My great grandparents John and Margaret Smith lived in Scarlett's Mill Cottages in the 1910's. He was a  gardener at Furnace Farm in Cowden until he went to France in the war. He died in 1917 in Cambrai and my grandmother and her children came back to Scotland to live. He is mentioned on the war memorial in Cowden
Does anyone have any old pictures....would be lovely to see
