Hi All.

I agree with what has been said the marriage would give you better information to go on.
But as I had  looked at the Notts FHS birth and marriage index and thought I would mention it....

This baptism, and it is the only Ethel Brentnall that came up, and no other children seem to have been baptised to this couple;

ETHEL BRENTNALL, father Joseph, mother Selina, born 7th Dec 1893, baptised 25th Feb 1894 at Nottingham St Mary, fathers occupation Cordmaker.

Marriage;
JOSEPH BRENTNALL SESTON & SELINA SLACK, 10th June 1893, at Nottingham St Mary.

As you mentioned a possible marriage to Selina Slack I wonder if it is relevant, maybe he dropped the surname Seston?

I don't mean to confuse the issue, just something to consider at some point?

Regards Sheila.

I see a birth registered in the name Joseph Brentnall Seston in 1868 - ties in perfectly.

Good bet for 1881, given mother's name 'Silvy':

Though apparently Sylvia and Joseph weren't married until 1884:
June 1884 - Nottingham 7b 564
Joseph Brentnall to possibly Silvya Seston

Indeed John, Joseph and Samuel were all registered as Brentnall Seston (they are all on FreeBMD)

I'm not sure what the 1881 occupation actually says for father Joseph - it might be 'cannot work' - he is blind.

Silvya's age is a little out in 1881 too - she  was born ca. 1845 - will post previous census details for her later.

As for Joseph, senior, he apparently wasn't too sure about his age either ... ::)

Hi Cov

I agree with Tati in 1851 the place of birth is Burton Joyce. I think George Walker is a visitor not a boarder. Also it is Riste's Place not Risles. Riste's Place is off Barker Gate just to the NE of St Marys church leading almost to Woolpack Lane.
