1841 - John VALLIS - Frome
« on: Saturday 17 March 07 12:31 GMT (UK) »
Looking for John Vallis/Valles b~1824 in Frome

I have 2 references for a John who I believe might be the same person:
1) John, s/o John Vallis b1798 and Sophia Cuzner b1799 - Bapt 24 Oct 1822 Frome St John Selwood
2) 1851 Census @ 63 Mathews Barton, Frome, St Peters, Somerset
Source H.O. 107/1932 Page/Folio 16/330

Could SKS try and find the 2nd one on the 1841 please - possibly at least that way I would know if I'm dealing with two persons or one.

only John & Sophia Vallis couple that I can see in 1841 and 1851 are
1851 King St, Frome H0107/1932 folio 398 pg 36
John Vallis head mar 53 cordwainer b. Frome
Sophia wife 51 harness maker b. Frome
John son 17 carpernter's apprentice b. Marston Bigott
Jane dau 15 employed in harness making b. Marston

they are in Marston Bigott in 1841. Looks like the John of the baptism you have might have died and they used the name again for a later son.

Thanks Osprey

So it looks like we are looking for another John in 1841.
Do you think the trade of Shoemaker may be a good pointer - mind you he would only be ~15 years old in 1841.....

should be apprenticed at that age. One of the problems with the 1841 census is that quite often the occupation is given only for the head of the house.
I can see a John Valles in Frome of the right age, male servant with Harriett Cork, a drop(?) maker.  BUT, he's enumerated as NOT being born in Somerset.
No luck with one who has anything to do with shoemaking as yet.

Do you have his marriage certificate? If so, what is his father's name and occupation and what address was he married from?

Have you tried replacing the V with W when searching?
There are a lot of similar names in Frome that start with W.  I have been searching for WILLIS/WALLIS etc., and Frome keeps popping up disproportionately (and is not what I am interested in).

I am researching quite a lot of them actually.  And am ultimately hoping for some modern descendants.  Early 19thC origins in Wilts/Hants, and they spread out at least to London from there.
I do not have my files with me at the moment, am using someone else's computer.  I will PM you later, I hope;  sometimes I forget when I get home.  Oops!
