Looking for CREW/CREWE ??
« on: Sunday 18 March 07 00:23 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

I would really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on where my gg grandfather John CREW or CREWE may have originated.

John CREW married Elizabeth PRESTON on 22 Dec 1828 in Manchester.
On the 1841 England Census, he is living at Oldham Lancashire, b 1803 out of county.
On the 1851 England Census, he is still living at Oldham, b 1803 in Wrekin, Pembroke.
He died in Oldham on 15 Mar 1852 and his age was given as 49.

I know there is no Wrekin in Pembroke, but I was hoping someone may know of a place that sounds like it and/or whether anyone has access to Pembroke records that may point me to where the name CREW/E has been found in Pembroke.

I have searched all of the parish records around the Wrekin area in Shropshire with no luck.

This has been a true stumbling block for me and any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Annie,

I think I have nearly exhausted the Wrekin (Shropshire) option and am now concentrating on the Pembroke option.

Does anyone think that Trefin may have been misheard/mistranscripted as Wrekin?  It's the only town name I can see that even vaguely resembles Wrekin.

Hi - was wondering if the PEMBROKE in your question probably referred to the county of Pembrokeshire?

There is a parish called HAKIN only about three or so miles from Pembroke (near Milford Haven somewhere on the map).

I don't know it well but thought it might help.

Was he a mariner by any chance?  Milford was, and is, a port.

Good luck!

Thank you for that WelshBabe.  Would Hakin sound like Wrekin when spoken by a Welsh person?

Can never tell!  Was it definitely spelt WREKIN or was the writing obscure?
