The LDS have filmed records for the army regimental books and this includes the 82nd Foot. These books contain the soldiers names , virthpalces and many other details all drawn up in table format.
I ordered a film for the records covering the period 1808-1825 when my ancestor was RSM in the 82nd Foot:  It had many details of him including his physical description height eye colour etc.  Don't know what other time farmes are covered  by these films but if you look at the LDS website and go to Library holdings and search for 82nd Foot you should be able to establish if there is a film for you to order.
good hunting.

Thank you Charlotte. I didn't know they did army records too. You learn something every day. ;D

I will give them a ring and ask the question.

Margaret

Kevin Asplins Military website shows a list of men who received medals during their time in India.
He also offers further information on the medal holders.

Listed is:
WILLIAM WOODRUFFE  Private  2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade

Margaret, was William married to a Jane, because if so I have found him on the 1841 Census aged 20 and it looks like he was born  in Ireland.

Trish,

He was married to Mary Brown from Limerick and he came from Glossop Derbyshire, according to Attestation Papers for HEIC and all census from 1871-1901.

It is his birth details I am struggling to find born between 1829-1838, according to census info and death details. ::)

He was in the Army in 1861, married in 1860 in Ireland and 1st child born in England in 1870 was my grandfather. Two others before him born 1864 Gibraltar and 1868 Dublin.

I can only presume that his father died and his mother re-married, as numerous searches do not find him in Derbyshire at all. I have found an Edward with son William born c 1829 in Sutton Lincoln and that one is missing after 1851, but that is all I can see. It may be him, but a long shot I think.

Margaret
