Walter Nightingale
« on: Monday 19 March 07 03:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have lots of information on my grandmother's family tree, and am trying to get information on my grandfather.  His name was Walter Henry Nightingale, both sometime around 1918.  He married Gladys Krall around 1942, and they divorced around 1952.  He since remarried and had three children.  I know he is now deceased, but I don't know when.  My grandmother lived in Cambridge, so there may be some record of him there... I'm sorry to have so little information.   Hopefully someone can help, or at least point me in a direction to start looking.
Thanks,
Ellen.

Hi Ellen

Welcome to Rootschat

There's no quick fix to this - it's a case of ploughing through the GRO indexes looking for them. Fortunately these are now available free online at
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

First you really need to find the marriage, order the certificate which will give you fathers' names, then look up the birth of Walter, order the certificate which will give you his parents' names including his mother's maiden name, then you look for their marriage and so work backwards. Once you know Walter's parents it should get a bit easier as once you get back to 1901 you will hopefully be able to find them in censuses.

Once you get back to 1910 the GRO indexes have been transcribed and indexed at http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
which makes look ups much quicker - but it's not yet complete.

Just found a death on Ancestry of Walter Henry Nightingale age 68 in Liverpool registration district in Feb 1987. Date of birth given as 5 Feb 1918. Might be him

Good luck

David

Thanks for that David. I've also found his marriage in the lists, so will start ordering certificates and go from there.  Glad to hear it might get easier once I get back to 1901.

Hi SueBuzz.  Sorry it's taken me so long to reply I haven't been checking this website for a long time, but I would really love to talk to you.  I can't send personal messages until I've made 3 posts - so this my 3rd post and then hopefully I can send you a message!
