Roll of Honour - Second World War
« on: Monday 19 March 07 15:52 GMT (UK) »
My great uncle was in the Royal Navy (Portsmouth Division) and died in 1941 on HMS Auckland.  Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of the Roll of Honour?

Hi Wendi,

Thanks for that - I do already have a copy of this.  What I am trying to find is the Roll of Honour (obituary) that would have been printed in a newspaper maybe?

Again, thanks anyway.

Hi Ken,

Yes, I have already obtained the service records from the Navy archives.  Am I right in saying that the Roll of Honour is printed in a newspaper or am I calling it the wrong name?  I want to find out roughly when it was in the newspaper so as to narrow my research down a bit when looking through the archives for local newspapers in Manchester.

Thanks again for your help, Ken.

The "Roll of Honour" is from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission - http://www.cwgc.org

Mich

I think during WW1 most who were KIA were listed in local newspapers, found "only" photo of wifes great uncle that way.
But I believe this did not happen for WW2.

You might have to spend the day at Manchester Arc's http://www.manchester.gov.uk/libraries/arls/news.htm on the off chance something was wrote about him

Hi Ken,

Thanks for that.

Someone on Ancestry mentioned that it would have been in The Times and that Cambridgeshire County Council Libraries allow people to access The Times archive from home using their library card.  I will have to look into this.  Failing that, I will have to go to Manchester Library next time I'm in the area as I live in Kent.

Thanks again for your help,

Hi,

Don't know if it will be of interest but I have previously found some ancestors at www.gazettes-online.co.uk   (the London edition)

I had a quick look and the Auckland is mentioned (28th November 1941) with regard to medals given.
