« on: Tuesday 20 March 07 08:57 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

 can anyone help me?

does anyone know any information on pubs and when they closed?

i am looking for the George and Dragon Pub in Charlton-on-Otmoor i know that the inn keeper was Benjamin Hatwell between 1869 - 1877 he died in 1895 but i was wondering if anyone would know if this pub was still around and if not when it closed?

many thanks

Lea

It was still there on the 1901 Census. There is a pub in Charlton on Otmoor called the Crown maybe it was renamed.

Hello. I know that your question dates back many years, but here's hoping that you still use this website. I used to visit the George and Dragon with some frequency with friends back in 1978-1979. At that time it was owned and run by a local landowner and farmer called James Henman who lived on a neighbouring farm. He subsequently used to drink in the Plough at Noke, among other places. The George was a particular favourite with us because it always had a happy vibe, plus, at the time, a video machine called 'Depth Charge', where you had to blow up submarines using explosives jettisoned from a ship on the screen; it was hugely popular. Unfortunately, I moved from the area in the early 1980's but the pub was still open at that time, but I don't know when it closed for good, sorry. I know a lot of the pubs around that area as I lived in Grendon Underwood. Regards. Mark.
