enlisted in Pontypool, what regiment
« on: Tuesday 20 March 07 20:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Doing some research for a family member, his Grandad

Albert George Drinkwater was wounded during WWI , i have looked at the MICs and there are two Albert Gs, one in the Notts and Derby and one in the Yorkshires.

All they know is he enlisted in Pontypool, is it possible he is one of these two. Or does anyone know what regiments enlisted in Pontypool?

He was born in 1893.

Any ideas, i've asked if they have a photo.

Kev. ;D

Kev,
You say he was wounded. Badly enough to be invalided out?
Just wondering whether you can distinguish the right one by virtue of his having an SWB?

Hi Kevwood !!

SWB = Silver War Badge a quote from The Long, Long Trail "Many of the men and women who were invalided out of the army after a wound or sickness that led to a medical down-grading were awarded this badge. It was authorised in September 1916, and applied to people in this category whether they were at a theatre of war or at home."

is it possible he is one of these two.

A uniformed photo  may clinch it, but it's wholly possible that he his one of those two, particularly after 1915 they were enlisting from all over the country to fill regiments who were depleted, so enlisting in Pontypool would not necessarily mean automatic assignment to a Welsh Regiment.

Kev

the problem is bigger as you can't discount the Alberts without an initial

sorry!  ::)

Hi Kev !

As he's plain George in 1901 census - maybe you should look at the Georges in the Welsh regiments !!  ::)

Hi all, thanks for your replies.

I really don't know much about him. I think he may have got an SWB.

As Harribobs says he could well be any of the Alberts, I have asked if they have his medals and for a photo, but no news yet!!

Annie,  He could well be listed as George although that is the onlt time he appears as it on anything so im guessing its an enumerator error.

Or it could be a Welsh thing Kev....

I've been having a conversation about Welsh families always calling themselves by their middle names  ::) so much so that some families, even today, didn't realize that they did it until I asked the question

- so keep an open mind (as always with family research) !  but it does seem to be something that I have found to be a Gaelic thing  :-\

However if no one else on that census called themselves by a middle name.......who knows, just thought I'd mention it

Hi Wendi, very true, a lot of my welsh relatives seemed to have used their middle names.

He would definately have got an SWB. He was shot in the leg, by the time it was treated he had gangrene and lost his leg.

As far as i'm aware without paying for all the MICs theres no way of finding out which one is there?

If Ancestry ever get their pensions datbase up to D would that tell me much?

Probably quite a lot, the ones I have seen are quite interesting - if not giving a little too much information sometimes!

Neil is probably the best one to answer regarding the Silver War Badge, as I recall it's a completely different index  :-\
