depending on what the marriage cert shows up, could I offer this Lev* for consideration as he gives Llawhaden as his pob on more than one census?

1851 Drim Wood, Llawhaden H0107/2475 folio 605 pg 19
John Mathias head mar 60 ag lab b. Little Newcastle
Mary wife 53 b. Narberth
Levy son 9 (no pob given)
John Davies lodger widower 31 navigator b. nk
Thomas Mathias lodger widower 38 navigator b. nk
John Green lodger unm 25 navigator b. nk

there's a Mary Mathias aged 11 b. Llawhaden lodging next door, perhaps the navvies were in her bed!
Births in Llawhaden would come under Narberth registration district.

same family in 1841
Drim Wood, Llawhaden H0107/1445/2 folio 6 pg 5
John Mathias 48 ag lab
Mary 43
Anne 15
Benjamin 13(?)
Lettice 10
Thomas 8
Catharine 5
Mary 3
all born in county

Whichever Levi it is, like Suzard I can see only one in 1861 at Cwmtawe, Alltygrug in the parish of Llanguicke.

Good find Osprey

There is in 1861 (just to complicate matters!)

Port Royal harbour Jamaica
Roayal navy
Vessel St George

Levi Matthews 20 Single Ordinary Narberth Pembroke

RG9 4441 25 10

can't see a levi matthews of thisd.o.b. on previous census -image looks like Matthews, but could be read as Matthias?????

Thanks both of you for your efforts.

Given the year and pob I reckon osprey could be right on the 1841 and 1851 census.
I guess the marriage certificate may provide other clues, though I expect the family would love to think it was him in the royal navy in Jamaica in 1861.

Suz, agree with you about that surname - could just as well be Matthias. Wonder what became of him? Can't see him on a later census and I've had a look at the marine death indices up to 1880 and there's no sign as far as I can see. Also wondering how long someone signed up for with the navy at that time. Could he be in the navy in 1861 and marrying and probably not in the navy in 1868?

If he is the one that was in the workhouse, there's a link to the Narberth workhouse from the Genuki page for the parish and there are records at Pembrokeshire Record Office. Pictures on the link as well.

Roll on the marriage certificate arriving. Do let us know what happens.

Suz, Osprey

Marriage certificate arrived today. Shows Levi as a labourer and his father named as John Mathias, which ties things up nicely for me to 51 and 61 census.

One slightly odd thing though is that the ages of both parties to the marriage is stated as "full" ?? Was this a usual practice?

Many thanks for your help.

Yes , it was quite common for ages to be given as full.
Just means that they were over the age of 21.

It's quite common to find age given as "full" on marriage cert -it just means they were 21 or over. Sometimes they put their age, sometimes "full" -as then 21 was the age where you could marry without parental consent (it's 18 now)
