Can anybody check SDGW to see if an age is listed? please.

His medal card shows him as a Sergeant.

Thank you harribobs  ;)

Born Hampshire,
Enlisted Hampshire,
Buried Hampshire, and another SDGW/CWGC discrepancy over date of death  ::)

but very definitely KRRC, so

Top photo Army Service Corps, Bottom photo 6th Battalion Hampshire Regt

Possibly not the chap in your photo Tuscany  :-\ Had you thought about trying to obtain Francis Cawte's death cert?

You lovely people,

You've answered a few more of my questions.

Wendi, death certificate should be here in a week or so. I shall be going to see his grave tomorrow.  I think I have come to the conclusion that he is not the chap in either photo.  The annoying thing is I have a photo that he is on but I don't know which one he is.  I shall need to trawl through all the old photos and see if I can find a match.

I knew he died in England, Lambeth, according to the index, and I guessed he died from wounds received, but where, and where would the records be?

I went on the SDGW site but couldn't find any of the information you have so I presume I was looking in the wrong place.  What is a medal card, and is there any further information on there, did he have any medals?

I wonder if the date of death discrepancy comes about because someone has taken the date they were notified as the date of death, because of the 12 day difference.

Lastly having checked myself then had it verified his birth is recorded as June 1880, so he would have been 35.  I have never been able to find a marriage for him so, if he didn't marry his possessions would have been returned to his mother (father died when he was a baby).  Would he have made a will and is it possible that there would be a record?

You can probably tell I'm fairly new to genealogy, and have never researched a military person before so I really do appreciate all your help and interest.  Us newbies would find it very difficult without help at times.

Many thanks

Both  ::)

It was lovely to meet you Tuscany  ;D

We nattered and nattered about family and military history and eventually, went down to the church and found Franks grave, and it didn't rain!
