Edward Matthew Saunders
« on: Sunday 25 March 07 18:16 BST (UK) »
Just wondered if anyone could help.

Edward Matthew Saunders was born in abt 1855 in Oxfordshire his father, also Edward M, was born in Knaresborough.

Edward Matthew married Elizabeth(Betsy) Maxwell in Sheffield 1876.In the 1881 census they lived in Ecclesall Bierlow.

But, in the 1891 census he was married to Harriet?b.1864 in Sheffield, I can't  find out who Harriet was,or when and if he married her.

Edward Matthew's daughter,Florence, was my great grandmother but I don't know if Betsy or Harriet was her mother.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This looks like Florence's birth registration:

Births Dec 1888   (>99%)
SAUNDERS    Florence Marsden
Sheffield 9c 401

There are also registrations in Sheffield for other children with the same middle name:

Dec Q 1885 - Bertram Marsden SAUNDERS

Mar Q 1892 - Fred Marsden SAUNDERS  (d. Jun Q 1892)

Jun Q 1893 - Ethel Marsden SAUNDERS  (d. Dec Q 1899)

Mar Q 1896 - George Marsden SAUNDERS

Bertram is wrongly listed as Benjamin in 1891, but is shown correctly in 1901 along with Florence ("Florrie") and George.

I imagine that these are all Harriet's children, as the older ones don't have the same middle name.  It's likely that Harriet's surname was Marsden, but the best way to be sure is to buy Florence's birth cert!  (I can't see a marriage or an obvious death for Edward's first wife.)

Hi again

Like you I couldnt find a remarriage for Edward or a death for Betsy however I do think its possible that Harriet is Elizabeth/Betsey from the 1881.

The 1891 also has 2 of the children also with different names to what it says in the 1881 cencus and also her birthplace is Sheffield same as 1881 and her age is also consistant its only out by 2 years but to be sure I would be tempted to get a birth cert or two perhaps the eldest child and the youngest.

Hi Joe and Rambler,
I think you are both right and I will need to get Florence's birth certificate, it's the only way I can sure.
Thankyou both very much for taking the trouble to look for me.

A burial from Sheffield Indexers (http://sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org):

Saunders, Fred Marsden (child, age 5 mo).
Died at 1 ct Portland St; Buried on June 4, 1892 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 11006, Section W of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

This may be a public grave, but if you post a query on their message board (no registration required) someone should be able to tell you if this grave has a gravestone.

A Bertram SAUNDERS is buried in Walkley Cemetery:

Grave J163
SAUNDERS Bertram 29 Sep 1930 57 Morley St 45 TM Archer
MARSH Nellie 23 Dec 1946 35 Morley St. 61 J.W.A. Copeland
[name/date of burial/address or place where death occurred/age/minister]

The ministers are Anglicans. This grave has a gravestone, as yet unrecorded.
