Royal Artillery in 1850's
« on: Monday 26 March 07 20:36 BST (UK) »
I discovered by chance that my B-I-L's great grandfather was in the army.
With no information about his army career at all, I finally managed to track down the start of his army pension payments. This was in Exeter on 11th October 1859 after being discharged on 20th September 1859. He was a private and received a permanent pension.
The only details of his regiment were Depot Brigade Royal Artillery.
Am I right in thinking that this is not a complete record?
Should it have a Battalion or division number with it?

What exactly would I need to find out and where would I look for it?
Any help much appreciated.

Hi Wendi,
Army pensioner was given as father's occupation on his son's marriage certificate. Quite a shock as previous generation and one after were in the Navy!!
I worked through all the pension payments for about twenty years in the area his wife was living and managed eventually to get the info about the payment. Unfortunately he did not get married or have children until after he left the army so no info on any other certificates. He only appears on the census before and after his army career, so no help there, and is no where to be found in 1851 when he is in the army.
I would really like to find his regiment, and then his record,  but I don't quite know how to go about it.
