Hugh Lewis Kennedy
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 12:50 BST (UK) »
How do I solve this problem?

I have a Hugh Lewis Kennedy born around 1870 according to his marriage to Edith Jane Sales in Canterbury in 1898.

In 1898 he was a Private in the Scots Fusiliers and was living in Chatham Barracks, Chatham Kent.

His father was James Kennedy according to his marriage certificate.

I believe Edith and Hugh moved to Lewisham around 1917.

I am trying to find out where he was born and his mother.  I thought perhaps if I could find some Army information, It might help me.  Unfortunately I cannot go to London to search.

I cannot find them on the 1901 census.

Any help would be appreciated on this.

Kind regards
Hoppity.    ???

Hi,

I run the Kennedy One-Name Study
www.kennedydna.com/kennedy_one_name_study.htm

Did the marriage certificate list the occupation of the father, they usually do?
Did you search the 1881 census with head of household James? There was only one England household with a Hugh K with head of household James and that Hugh has a yob of 1871
Household:

Did you come across this record? Perhaps you can check the father's occupation against your marriage certificate.

Then if you use freebmd for Hugh Ks born 1870-1871 you find

which covers Liverpool, so I would say this is him.

Hi Iain,

Thank you for this.  I did look at this birth and have decided to order the certificate to see what it reveals.

Actually I think you may have found them as on his marriage certificate, his father's profession was Carpenter!

Can I ask, do you know who would I need to contact to find his army records?  Unfortunately I cannot go myself.

Thank you so very much for your time.

Kind regards
Hoppity

I am not sure how much if any ancestral information you will get from his army record if it survives. I have my grandfather's service record and there is none on it apart from his dob.  Also if he was only ever a private there won't be much. myfamily.com the Utah company (aka 'ancestry.co.uk' ) have started digitising UK military records but so far they have just done a few pension records and not the letter 'K'.

I already searched the last of these for you and it looks like no mention, probably due to his low rank.

regards

Iain
