Census for after 1912.
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 13:25 BST (UK) »
I may be totally out of order asking these questions, I have a Isaac Rees born in Russia in 1866, and by 1889 was in England,  In 1912. he had a second wife, ( do not know her name, ) and four children, 2 by the first marriage, they were 1898 Isaac, and 1901, Leah. first wife died 1906,  two more children arrive Abraham born abt 1907, and Israel born abt 1909, Isaac and family are suposed to have gone to America after this date, can anyone find a link anywhere , so that I can pick up the threads, I know I am asking a lot, but this family is driving me insane.    love from Eilleen.

Thankyou for having a look and replying,  Now I have something else to chase about,  this is not my family, but an elderly gentleman who cannot see very well, keeps coming into the charity shop that I manage, and keeps giving me scraps of paper with another request , I just cannot say No to him.   Eilleen.

Hi Eilleen

Had another search this morning and found a passenger list entry for Florence Rees which shows that the Isaac Rees entries for 1921 and 1932 are the same person. Here is the detail:

Ship, Philadelphia, arriving New York 10 May 1920

Florence Rees, age 34, Fruiter? (Merchant written over the top)
Nationality (country of which citizen or subject), Great Britain,
Race Hebrew,
Last residence, London England
Nearest relative, Mr Rees, 6 Birchfield St, Poplar, London E
Destination, Chicago, Illinois
Passage paid by "Self"
Relative, Father, Mr Lavenshon (spelling!), 1114 W15th Street, Chicago, Illinois
Born Koona Russia

There are three questions asked under the heading "Purpose of coming to United States"

Whether alien intends to return to Country from whence they came....answer Yes
Length of time alien intends to remain in US...answer 8 months
Whether alien intends to become citizen of US....answer No

I have looked again at the other passenger lists for the answers given to these questions

In 1932 For both Isaac and Florrie the answers are:

Yes....3 months....No

Also in answer to the question of whether been to US before...Yes...1921...date of last departure...1921

In 1921 answers for Isaac are:

Yes....6 wks....No

and never been to the US before.

It looks as though they were travelling to the US and back (maybe visiting relatives?) plus there are no naturalization numbers on the manifests for either.

Hope this catches you before you see the gentleman.

Best wishes

Agnes

Agnes, It's maybe just as well, that your last lot of searching did not reach me before I left  for work, I do not think the gentleman would have taken it all in,   When he popped his head through the door, he said " I don't supose you have had any luck " I took him through to my office and went through what you had found and also Isaac's british nationalisation papers that I had found, as well as the history of the Russian villiage he had been born in,  he just sobbed, it appears that Isaac is this gentlemans wife's grandad,  he said" she is  very poorly at the moment and all though this news was emotional it would do her the world of good,  he said to send you a big thankyou from both of them, and said he could'nt believe how a total stranger could be so kind, and  may you also find kindness like you have show,    It's been a very emotional day, it's amazing how people from the past can enter are live's.   I will give the gentleman your other finds , when he calls in again next Tues.     thankyou, love from Elaine.

Oh Eilleen

I am sat here crying myself after reading your message.

It is strange but from your original request I just "felt" that this search was really important. I have tried all day to find other information from the US records but I just haven't come up with anything else at all.

Please tell him that it has indeed been a pleasure and honour to do such a small thing and if you think that he may like the images then please PM me and I will give you my email address.

Very best wishes and you are wonderful to help this gentleman in this way.
