Is there a place in Kent named SHORNCLIFFE
« on: Thursday 29 March 07 12:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

is there a place in Kent called Shorncliffe?

On the 1881 census it gives the name on my Grandfather Robert Hargreaves as been born in Shorncliffe and I was told it is in Kent.

He was born in 1872 and his parents were Charles and Mary Jane Hargreaves. His father Charles was in the military, so the family was probably living in or around a Military Depot.

I am trying to find Robert's birth and baptism.

Kind regards
Wendy

Yes, the Camp is virtually in Folkestone ...

so this  m a y  be your chaps Birth Index entry - not totally uncommon not to have named him by the Regn Deadline .... Elham is the correct District ..

Hi Wendy

You could always ask for a check on the parents' names with the birth reference given by Newfy or else have you tried the following suggestions?

For a baptism, I would suggest the most likely local parish church to be Cheriton unless, of course, a military chapel :-\

Hi there,
Certainly in 1935 when my partners mother was born there ,there was a hospital on the barracks- "St Helena's" Maybe it was there in 1881.
Hope this fills in a bit of info for you.

Hi Children
I live in sunny but windy Cheriton. There is a Garrison church on the camp site which is no longer used by the army. The Gurkha regiment are stationed there at the moment. The military cemetery is still used. The nearest local parish churches are St Martins and All souls.
Hope this helps
