Seeking Info on Yorkshire Regiments
« on: Thursday 29 March 07 21:51 BST (UK) »
Two brothers of my grandmother were KIA during the Great War.

Willie Brearley, age 21, Pvt, 9th Bn, Duke of Wellington (West Riding Regiment) was killed in France on 07/07/1916. His name is listed on the Thiepval Cemetery Memorial.

His brother Arthur Lewis Brearley, age 24, Pvt, 8th Bn, Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in Belgium on 16/09/1916.  His name is listed on the Ploegstreert Cenetery Memorial.

Any one tell me about these Regiments?

9th Batt Dukes as part of the 17th division was part of an attack that started on the 7th july ( with the 12th Manchesters) attacking quadrangle trench (contalmaison) in broad daylight, small parties secured a foothold in acid drop copse, they were cut down by machine gun fire from the germans holding Mametz Wood and artillery

i only have the casualty figures for the manchesters and they are not good reading, the battalion was almost wiped out

Thank, for the info.  As I say, these individuals are my grandmother's brothers.
I know this family is not the only family to lose multiable members in war.  As my grandmother died in 1957, I never really knew her background.

Thanks again,

Richard
