I have also found some info regarding a Great Great Grandfather by the name of Richard Roderick Grant.  He was born around 1839 in Bolton Lancs and was in the military for many years. Most of his children were born in the East indies and my Great Grandfather was born in Scotland.  I am interested to know about his work in the east indies as he seemed to have spent alot of time there. On the 1881 census he is described as a Pay M Sergt 1 W Y Militia. Living here "barracks 718th Bde Depots" Tanshelf Pontefract.

How do I find out about this chap?

Many thanks

He wouldn't have been in the militia when serving in the East Indies, militia were home service only.

First thing you really need to discover is his regiment during this time.
You say most of his children were born in the east indies. Have you searched for their birth certificates in the GRO Army Births Indices?

If you care you care me names and approx. dates, I could have a quick look for you. With luck, you'll find the birth entries and these will mention a regiment.

I'm slightly confused as there are what seems to be duplicate entries with different regiments specified, but anyway the GRO Regimental Birth Indices has the following entries:

William D. Grant, born Murree, Punjab 1865 (regiments mentioned 72nd, 91st, 79th)

Richard R. Grant, born Kussowlic (looks like that anyway) 1870. Same regiments mentioned

George Grant, born Umballa, Punjab 1873 (regiments mentioned 72nd, 91st)

Hopefully that's given you a lead.

Hi,

The 1st West Yorks Militia became the 3rd Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, on the Cardwell changes in 1881.

The records are in WO 68/448 , 474 , 499, at the NA.

His rank is shown as Pay Master Sergeant.

Hope this helps
