Victoria Cross Holders
« on: Saturday 31 March 07 21:11 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there is a website which shows photos of VC holders ?

I have a series of books - by HW Wilson 'The Great War' in 13 volumes(written during and just after the Great War) and it is packed full of VC Holders photos and citations. I wondered if anyone would be interested in look ups or if they can actually get this information elsewhere anyway

I don't know if this helps with finding his picture, but an acting Corp.  Charles Sharpe of the 2nd Battn, Lincs Regt, was gazetted in the London Gazette, 29th June 1915, for his bravery near Rouges Bancs on 9th May 1915.

Cpl Charles Sharpe features in Volume IV Page 389 of 'The Great War' edited by HW Wilson. Extract as follows:-
' On May 9th  the British Forces delivered a successful attack on the German position near Fromelles and on that day four Victoria Crosses were  won........ Trench taken by five men - Near Rouges Bancs the 2nd Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment was playing a part in this attack, and there Corporal Charles Sharpe was-unknowingly of course - emulating Ripley. Being in charge of a party sent forward to capture a portion of a German trench, he was the first to reach it. Once there he threw his bombs with great determination and effect, and in a short time he had cleared all the Germans from a trench fifty yards long. In the end all his men had fallen, but four others came forward to assist Sharpe, and the five made another successful attack on the enemy, using their bombs which such vigour that they captured this time a trench, not fifty, but two hundred and fifty yards long.'

Cpl Charles Sharpe features in Volume IV Page 389 of 'The Great War' edited by HW Wilson. Extract as follows:-
Continued.....
'Ripley, Finlay, Sharpe and Upton were among the ten heroes who received the V.C. on June 29th'

The four VCs awarded on May 9th were to
Cpl John Ripley & L/Cpl David Finlay of The Black Watch
Cpl Charles Sharpe Lincs Regiment
Cpl James Upton Sherwood Foresters
(Hence the reference to 'Ripley' in Charles Sharpe's account)

Unfortunately there is no photograph of Charles Sharpe in the book.
Did Charles survive the war ?  Looks like he was in from the start. Quite an early service number as only 4 numbers.
As Fred says he is in the London Gazette - link below

Hi, I found him in Grandad's book (The Victoria Cross- The Empire's Roll of Valour, 1929) which just gives the gazette version, so I won't type it out- it isn't quite so detailed and doesn't add anything extra.:)
The wording is just the same as the NA website.

Hi Fred
Do you think the extracts from the books will be of interest ?
They are a bit different from the gazette version
Hope we are okay on copyright as they are transcriptions ?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
