Birth Records for 1863/4 Montreal
« on: Sunday 01 April 07 00:07 BST (UK) »
Can anyone advise me how I can find a birth record for Charles Miller Baker the son of George Baker a soldier in the British Army serving in Canada in about 1863/4.
1871 UK census information shows Charles's place of birth as Montreal Canada and his age is 7.

Any help much appreciated - Eve (in UK)

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

You would have to first of all know what religion, then what area they lived in, in order to narrow down what church. Unfortunately, Quebec did not start civil registration until "1994". Here is a link that might better explain this.

Hi Janice

Thanks for the welcome and the information , I have very little info on him so it's obviously not going to be easy but you have given me a good start.  Thanks again

Here is a link for the Lovell's Montreal Directories.

You may be able to find out where his unit was located in Montreal, in order to narrow it down.

I could be wrong, but I thought that births overseas had to be registered in the U.K.(?)
Here is a link for overseas births for U.K.

Hi Eve,

As the child of a British soldier, he is unlikely to be recorded in any Montreal church records.  He most likely would have been baptised by the army chaplain.  (British troops are also not recorded on the Canadian census).

I don't know if army births HAD to be registered with the GRO overseas, but many of them are.  In addition to the info link that Janice provided above, I believe the only online searchable index for those registrations is at 1837online (pay-per-view site).  I would think the paper or microfilm copies of the indexes would be available anywhere that has access to the hard copies of the regular GRO BMD indices?

Hi Janice & MJP

That's brilliant - sounds a bit more promising.  I know of the site so I will get searching.  Thank you both.

Best Regards   Eve  :)   :)
