Blanchland Records
« on: Monday 02 April 07 22:40 BST (UK) »
Hi

I went to Blanchland and Woodhorn at weekend in search of my ancestral roots-a great success! Does anyone know the whereabouts or otherwise of Blanchland records pre-1753?

Looking for baptism of a John Ward c 1713

Cheers, Anne

Hi Anne,

It all depends on what religion they were and what you are looking for.

They may have traveled outside of Blanchland to Hexham or Rowley nr Castleside or any other church meeting house

They may have been baptists which go back to 1642 in Hexham. i think they don't get baptised until they are adults?

Here's a couple of Wards that are buried in Edmundbyres graveyard (just up the road)

John Ward d. Dec 10th 1812 aged 86yrs
Elizabeth Ward wife, d. June 9th 1807 aged 86yrs
Elizabeth Ward  daughter, d. Feb 6th 1813 aged 56yrs
Mary Ward daughter, d. Jan 13th 1812 aged 51yrs
John Fewster son, d. Feb 25th 1768 5yrs

Thomas Ward d. Nov 6th 1838 aged 81yrs
Isabella Ward, wife, d. Sept 19th 1810 aged 29yrs
Thomas Ward son, d. Apr 27th 1810 aged 6mths
Mary Ward dau d June 1855 aged 26yrs

Blanchland, Edmundbyres and Muggleswick is all in the same area.

There was also a John Ward involved in the Muggleswick conspiracy which you can read about here:- stating on p.18 Muggleswick

There may also be records if they owned or were tenants of a farm.

Regards

Thank you all; I have the burial and gravestone for John Ward at Blanchland (died aged 69 in 1782) and that of his son John died aged 22 in 1780.

John senior's name was Ann but she isn't mentioned on the stone. John is of Burnshealshaugh; next to this stone is one for the children of Robert and Anne Ward of Hillhouse. I believe John and Robert to be brothers.

I had read the thing about Muggleswick and the Muggleswick Giant and wondered if there may be a connection.
