Uniform ID please

This is my great uncle born in Jullunder, India in 1883 to British Army parents (of Irish descent).
If anyone could date the photo and give me some info on the regiment.
He looks a bit old for it to be WW1 - because he would only have been about 40 when WW1 ended ?

Starter for ten.  ::)

Without a full front on look at the cap badge it is a bit difficult, but I would have a stab at a Corporal in the Devonshire Regiment.

The photo itself is certainly later than WW1, though your g-uncle was definitely in WW1 as he's wearing the medal ribbons for the Star, BWM and Victory.  :)

Have you looked for his MIC on the TNA site?

Would agree with Neil in the fact that it was taken well after the 1st ww. The tunic blouse was tailored more closely to fit in the twenties and the use of collar dogs was introduced from 1924.

He would have been too old to serve in WW2 wouldn't he - or maybe he stayed in after WW1 as a regular ?
I have just taken a look at the TNA Medal Index but I could not find his card - nay ideas ?

If he was in uniform during the second world war I would have thought that he would be in the LDV (Home Guard) rather than in the regulars (working on the lines that being an ex-soldier he would have been in khaki rather than fire watching/ air raid warden etc).

That is usually the rule! There is a picture in the Army Medical Services Museum of a chap with 48 yrs service in the regulars...and the good conduct chevrons to show!  :)




As a full Cpl your chap would not be entitled to the GC chevrons...He is wearing a FS cap (khaki) so it must be post 1937....

It is possible he was still a reg....
