Pillgwenlly
« on: Monday 29 November 04 20:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Please can anyone tell me where Pillgwenlly is in Monmouth?  I can't find it on the map.

Sorry if it's spent incorrectly. This is how it looks on a marriage certificate.

Thanks Pheobe

Thank you I have found it on a very old map.

Thanks Pheobe. :)

Hi Pheobe

Yes there is a Holy Trinity church, it's in Potter Street and was built in1848.

Pillgwenlly has been an ecclesiastical parish since 1864.

 Hi  Pritch 19

Thank you for that. I will look for a picture on the internet now.

Could you please tell me if there is an Upper Raglan St in Pillgwenlly and is it near a railway station?

Thanks Pheobe :)

Raglan Street ran between Capel Crescent and Commercial Road and was not very near to a railway station as in right next to it but wasn't more than a mile and a half from the main railway station for Newport. There used to be a smaller station on the lower end of dock street that would be closer but that closed in the early part of the 20th century.
OK, now I have to ask, why do you want to know about the railway station? did your ancestor work on the railways?

Hi Ladkyis

Thank you for this information. Yes an ancestor was a signalman from 1879 when he married  at Pillgwenlly. His address was Upper Raglan St.

( Is it possible for anyone to get me a photo of Holy Trinity Church Please?)

He was still a signalman in 1901 when he was 44. He seemed to have so many addresses around Cardiff and Newport  some I have found on multimap that were right next to railway junctions. So, I am trying to follow his movements.

I am not sure if  a Signalman worked in signalboxes or not but, hopefully I will find  photos of some signal boxes in the areas.

Regards Pheobe :)

Ahh, now I understand! By living in Raglan Street he would have been within easy walking distance of Maesglas and there was a huge shunting yard there where the coal wagons were put into sidings until they were taken back up the valleys to be refilled and there were several signal boxes in the area.
There isa book about Pill called "Pillgwenlly, Newport" by Cliff Knight ISBN 0 907719 12 0. Published by Newport Borough Libraries and available from them at The Library, John Frost Square, Newport Gwent.NP20 1PA.
In this book are several pictures of Holy Trinity Church plus a lot of other pictures showing the way life used to be in this fascinating area of Newport. If you don't want to buy the book you should be able to borrow it from your local library through the inter-library loan service
