Used free 3 days on Ancestry at the weekend and found mother-in-laws relatives in 1891 census. Glad to hear 1901 is now there and have posted a lookup request under Census to see if they can be found in 1901.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Trish

I found that your Helen died in 1878, S & A. Mother's MN: Robertson

Ref - 009 page 16

Haven't done an 1881 check but the son's could have moved away and the daughters married  Undecided

Many thanks Gadget - I thought that may be the case. One of the sons came to oz (he appears to have "jumped ship") which was why I was searching - perhaps there are more out here as well. Was the info from SP? Helen's maiden name was Jam(i)eson - I didn't have her mother's name - the baptism only gave her father.

I still think the 1881 search is "wonky" if you have no surname.

Hi All,

Beware that all the estimated birth years have been calculated from 1891 not 1901.

Have just gotten a response from request for 1901 census information and all the ages are wrong- parents both listed as born c1853 (he was c1862 and she c1860), one son c1884 in 1901 (not listed in 1891) but I know that he was actually born c1894. Other two sons' ages also incorrect. It's nice to be able to find them in the 1901 census but can't rely on the ages.

Hi Aghadownwy- just subtract 10 (or add depending on how you look at it) Maybe even the number you first thought of and multiply by any other number and, if in doubt, return to our old friend Scotland's People  :)

Yes, Gadget, I think you've found the formula that Ancestry is using to get ages in the census!

Message for Trish251:

Much as I love the thought of somebody being a 'Boot Buslder', I suspect your Helen Dalziel was a Boat Builder's wife.   ;D You're never far from the sea in Shetland.

Re. the 1881 census, the Local History section of the library here in Fife has the CDroms (or CD wrongs as my son used to call them!) of the 1881 census. Very handy and easy to use. Maybe folk could persuade their own libraries to do the same. Ours are very well used.
