Morning Andrea,

Glad to make some sense out of this - were you aware of the Chambers name at all ?

Just found on IGI, 3 baptisms on 6 July 1794 of children to George Chambers & Elizabeth,  William (the senior thatcher), Sarah (alleged mother of William junior) & George.  We'll have to wait for David to look this up on BVI later.

Cheers John

(going out now into the sunshine)

Not heard of any Chambers in the family tree what so ever!

I'm going to try and put all this stuff on paper as I can't get my head around it at present!

Enjoy the sun - we have a lovely sunny day here too - not surprising really (I live in Athens )!! Next time I'm home in Stevenage I'll definitely drive over to Southill to check out the place!!

Keep up the fab work! Glad I found this website!

John

I covered the three christened on the same day yesterday 23.07 - described as "of riper years", and as such Sarah might well be mother of William

There were definitely two Williams christened on 14 Sept 1800, one illegitimate son of Sarah, the other son of William and Susanna. No other detail in the transcript. I have seen it before though, where an illegitimate child is baptised on the same day as a cousin; perhaps draws attention away from the illegitimate one.

Just back from town where we meet up each Sat lunchtime, after the market (red wine as well John, so you'll be OK!). Too hot to stay out now though! Visitors taking a siesta so have a few mins to think about the Finches

More soon

david

Samuel Whitbread's Notebooks (Beds HRS vol 50, 1971) Edited by Alan Cirket has the following entries (Samuel Whitbread was the local magistrate)

Monday 12 Dec 1814
Richard Bodger, complaint against Samuel King, John Harris, William Finch, James Rowney, Joseph Usher, William Harris, James Saby, William Hall, James Albone for burning his stubble and hedging on 5 November

Wednesday 14 Dec 1814
King, Southill constable, with boys on complaint of Bodger for burning his straw. Ordered them four stripes each the little ones, and six the larger ones; King the younger to be kept to produce evidence against other boys for letting off crackers.

It's interesting that as early as 1814 he was using the name Finch.

Just found various Chambers entries in Southill Baptist Church book. I'll type these up later

David

Hot here too David,  I've been working, digging the veg plot, it's easier after 2 pints.

Anyway, the name Finch was used in 1813 as per the Gaol database records !

& I did see the 'riper years' christenings after I went & reread all your replies.

Found an IGI marriage of George Chambers to Elizabeth Taylor at Langford on 11 OCT 1762.

Southill Baptist Church book

2 Oct 1815 William Chambers came before the church and gave a satisfactory account of the Lord's dealings with him and of our his faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and was baptised on Lords Day and joined the church on 5 October 1815

1819 George Chambers was baptised by Mr Tay and received into church fellowship

At our church meeting held 30 April 1830 we separated (ie kicked out) William Chambers, George Chambers, and Jemiah Taylor for inconsistent conduct may they be brought to repentence

(This might of course be the "other" William, or perhaps more likely, William the father of the other William.)

25 Dec 1846 Mary Chambers accepted into the church and was baptised the following Sunday

More later

Sorry to be bugging you with this over the Sunny Easter hols!  8)
Don't think the saying is correct about a problem shared is a problem halved in this instance!

I didn't realise I was opening such a can of worms with a simple question!!
I don't know how you are both keeping track, but glad you are!

Just to clear my mind, are we talking about one William who seems to go by the name Finch when naughty and Chambers when good or could there still be two?

Oh dear ... don't think the cold beer is helping my confusion!

Andi, ? are you Andrea on Genes Reunited ?  if you are NOT, then this person has some of your Finch names, but I am guessing you are the same person.

Yep, that's me unfortunately! Only had one contact through that site so far, and that was a few days ago! I wrote it earlier - she is related through Samuel Finch, but had even less info than me!
