Henry Oliver - Shipwright
« on: Friday 06 April 07 19:39 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm trying to find Henry Oliver, a Shipwright, who I believe is from Surrey and also his family.

His son also Henry was born in 1839 according to his service records or 1841 according to his marriage cert. I am inclined to trust his sign-up age as at over 20 y.o. he would not have needed to exaggerate. So he should be on the 1841 census somewhere!

On his marriage cert in 1872 he names his father as Henry Oliver (deceased) occupation Shipwright.

On the 1871 census he is a Corporal stationed at Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight.

On his service record he refers to a younger brother George.

I've been trying to find the family in Surrey in 1841 or 1851 on Ancestry and FindMyPast but no joy.

Any help appreciated,

RonnieG

Hi Ronnie

Where was Henry junior born according to the later census that you have found him on?

Should have been more specific - sorry.

On the 1871 he said Surrey, London.

On a speculative hunch I sent off for a birth cert for a Henry Oliver born in St.George the Martyr, Southwark.

His father (Henry Oliver) is stated to be an "Engineer" so I though maybe an engineer could also be or become a Shipwright.

I think I found Henry snr, the engineer on the 1851 in St John's Southwark (HO107/1559/403 p 45) but no sign of junior or his brother George.

I think I have this family again in 1861 living in kent but confusingly with another Henry jnr born 1853.

I think the "Surrey,London" answer indicates that he was born in the metropolitan part of Surrey, and not the countryside part.

Do his service papers indicate his date or place of birth? They often indicate civilian occupations.Likewise they usually indicate in which town he signed-up.

Damikinch

His original attestation was "lost" and a replacement was drafted up and signed by his Commanding officer while he was serving in India in October 1867.

It just confirms his original date of enlistment 19th June 1859 and his age in October 1867 as 28 years and 6 months.

There is no mention of date of birth or place or any occupation or skills.
