Bowling Green Inn - Leamington
« on: Sunday 08 April 07 00:57 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have two families who apparently were resident as landlords of the Bowling Green Inn, Leamington.

In 1901 Charles Duffin and his wife Catherine (nee Marks) were there with their family.

From electoral registers, I have discovered that her sister and husband, George Bratt and Sarah (nee Marks) were there a couple of years later.

Would this have been a usual occurance that pubs were taken over by family members - I doubt that they would have owned the pub as they did not appear to be families of any means?  Also, Charles had a history of hotel/pub work, but George was a Coal Merchant by trade!

Hello Tracy
Your family seem to have an affinity with pubs..Mercy me!
in 1901 Charles Duffin is listed as "working on own account" rather than employer. This would mean he was earning his own money but the pub was owned by someone else. It's still there today.

Hi Jim

How are you?

If you haven't seen the (many!) other threads on this lot you may be interested to know that you were right about Mercy all those months ago.  She was never married and died a spinster in 1973 - bit of a fibber on those certificates ::)

Still looking for Arthur though ???

Hi Tracy
I'm fine thanks.I'm glad you found your Mercy particularly as it seemed a bit of a challenge at first.Arthur doesn't want to be found, some people were like that,we call them conspiracy theorists today. So now it's another day, another pub.
Good luck with the search.
