I think I'm going to have to play one potato, two potato and either choose by locality or by year.  If we go by year it has to be the Newington one, the East London one doesn't fit with any of the census or the death certificate I received this morning.

Choices, choices :-\ :-\

Thanks Valda

Not that one then!  That's saved me from one order.  I did try to look through the Middlesex census returns and managed to knock a couple of other choices off but the rest remained inconclusive.  Didn't think about outside London.  ::) ::)

On the original register for the June quarter of 1856 there are 2 William Henry Baldwins together - one is registered in Newington (i.e. St Mary Newington in Surrey as you note) and the other in Islington which is just to the west of Hoxton/HackneyShoreditch.

It is tricky to read (please check it) but it looks like Islington June 1856 1b/231

Cheers

Hi Kerry

Is he the one with parents William and Emma?

He seems to disappear for a while - did he join the army or navy?  If so there may be a DoB on his record

Hi Josiah

His parents were William and Emma.  He didn't join the army as far as I know, although he cannot be found during the 71 or 81 census and only comes to light when he married Jane in 1883.  His occupation is warehouseman which he keeps til his death in 1905.    Having said that there is a William Baldwin, soldier on the census in 71.

I'll chase him up, see if I can find the 81 census.

Thank you for your suggestion.
