Is Staunton Harold in Derbyshire or Leicestershire?
« on: Sunday 08 April 07 23:24 BST (UK) »
HiYall :D

This Genealogy stuff can get VERY confusin' :-\

I have ancestors in my tree which are born Melbourne but claim to be from Leicestershire or Breedon to be more  precise.

The 1841 census splits Breedon (on the Hill & Brand) into two districts ~ Ashby De La Zouch (Leics) and Melbourne (Derbys).  My Tivey and Edwards (also Shakespeare) are from Breedon, Staunton Harold & Melbourne, but later Worthington (which also comes under Breedon in 1841 Melbourne ???)

I dont know where to look for records etc.................I went to Coalville Library this weekend and viewed Microfiche for Leics (Worthington) and part of the Fiche for Breedon..........the rest are in Derbyshire librairies. Why?

I tried google for Staunton Harold and found entries for both Derbyshire and Leicestershire attractions

Can someone who is good at maps, geography and history please give me an insight?

Cheers :-*

Genuki shows Staunton Harold, in the Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, registration district, from  1837 to 1949.

In 1868 it was stated that Staunton Harold was a township in the parish of Breedon on the Hill, Leicester.

However, places such as Staunton Harold reservoir are quoted as being in Derbyshire.

I can definately see the confusion though.  Looking at the Derbyshire Online Tourism guide, you see Staunton Harold Church in Ashby-de-la-Zouch being shown at: http://www.visitderbyshire.co.uk/details-2776.ihtml.  However, it's address is actually in Leicestershire.

My guess is that people living in the area never really knew where they were.

I have had similar problems with my own family, although in Lancashire &/or Cheshire, as many were born in a town in Lancashire, but most records for them are now held in Cheshire.

I have got used to always checking both counties, as it could be in either.  You may need to do the same, as the towns are so borderline.

Hi Chorlton ;D

Many thanks for your reply...............sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

I know what you mean about the Cheshire/Lancashire boundries.  I live in a place  which has a Warrington Cheshire postcode, the nearest large town is Leigh which comes under Greater Manchester, the nearest small town to me is Newton Le Willows which comes under St Helens Merseyside on the Other border is Ashton which is in Wigan!  Complete madness! Bring back Lancashire!

Cheers
