The Steyning registration district is in Sussex - I'm afraid that's all I know.

His birth was registered in the January-February-March quarter 1853. You'd have to get the birth cert for an exact date ...
Apparently and I didn't know this till a couple of weeks ago Steyning registration district covered Hove as well, which is next door to Brighton.

Kerry 8) 8) :) :)

Hove and the village of Preston (less than 3 miles due north of Brighton) both appear under the Sussex district of Steyning.
The parish church of Preston Village was/is (it's now closed) St Peters.

There is a paperback book that has illustrations of many of the impressive villas of Preston that have since dissappeared as their grounds were redeveloped for more affordable housing.  You should still be able to get a copy.  In all probability, your ancestor's home in Cleremont Villa, became Cleremont Villas, which is now just by the London Road railway station in Preston.

You probably have this already, but by 1881 your ancestor's sisters and an elderly aunt had 'downsized' to a large but not so extensive property at 19 Stanford Road, Preston.  (Census RG11 1099 38 17)

Hi, I came across this discussion because I'm researching Dr Langton as part of an education project with my kids at Hastings Museum.  We found a cigar tin of bird vertebrae that he had donated to the museum in 1919.  He has obituaries in Nature, the Museums Journal Volume 22 and the Bulletin of the British Ornithological Club from what I've found so far.  In 1921 his address is listed as St Moritz, 61 Dyke Road, Brighton.  Apparently there's a portrait in the museums journal, but I don't know if the curator at Hastings Museum who is running our sessions has been able to track it down yet.  I hope this helps
