WILSON - Carnmoney, Antrim 1803 - 1849
« on: Monday 09 April 07 16:14 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the records of Robert Wilson who was born on 19.06.1803 and died on 19.04.1849, both in Carnmoney.   Is anybody able to tell me if he would have been buried in Carnmoney Cemetary    I believe his mother, Margaret Ferguson b.1757 and his father, also a Robert Wilson born abt.1763  were married in Presbyterian, Carnmoney in 1788.   Any help would be appreciated -    grossan

Hi there,

I'm not sure if the following information will help or is in any way connected to your relative but I'll pass it on anyway.

My great grandparents on my father's mother's side, David (b1859 d1942) and Elizabeth Agnes (b1860 d1940) Wilson nee Larmour are buried in Carnmoney C of I churchyard which not only surrounds the church (the older section) but has an extension on the other side of Church Road where, after a search, I located my relatives grave a year or more ago. There is a Presbyterian connection in that they were married in Newington Presbyterian Church, Belfast. I haven't researched any further in this direction of my FT to date so am not sure why they are buried at Carnmoney C of I although the name Larmour is reasonably common there so that might be a clue.

I don't think Carnmoney Presbyterian Church has a churchyard but there is a large municipal graveyard (in two sections) adjacent to and partly joined on to the C of I churchyard but I doubt it was in existence at the dates you are referring to. So it's possible that your Wilson's may also be buried in the C of I churchyard.

Although I have never used the information as yet, I did establish last year that the contact at Carmoney C of I in relation to searching records is the Sexton, Mr Harry Hamilton Tel: 9083 5848.

P.S. If you think our Wilson's might be related I'd be interested in hearing more.

Hi Grossan.
Could this be your Robert ?.
Headstone inscription, taken from "Mallusk Memorials", by N.I.F.H.S.

Plot  147, old section.
WILSON.

Limestone  -  decorated top.
Erected by Robert Wilson of Ballyvesey as a tribute of regard to the memory of his uncle, James Ferguson who departed this life 15 April 1825 aged 69 years. Also the said Robert Wilson who died 10 April 1849 aged 44 years. Also his wife Jane who died 19 November 1875 aged 67 years. Also his grandson David died 23 July 1894 aged 16 years.
Janet Wilson died 29 August 1926
William John Wilson died 30 April 1930
Henry R. Wilson died 16 January 1945.

Perhaps the date for his death that you have is the burial date, as church records may only have the burial date and no death date. Also age at death  can be notoriously inaccurate, could explain him being only 44 on the headstone.
A lot of Wilson burials in this cemetery, also a few Ferguson burials.

Regards,
Dixie

Hi DixieDee,

Could you please explain '"Mallusk Memorials" by N.I.F.H.S.' Where can this data be accessed?

Thank you

Hi.
Sorry about that, I should have explained the source better.
It's a book by the Belfast Branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society.
There is a bit of a write-up about Mallusk Cemetery, plus maps showing plots, followed by a list of headstone details.
Reference for the book is,
ISBN 0-9524698-1-2
It was £5 when we bought it in 1997/98.
It may be possible to order it through your local bookshop, or direct from N.I.F.H.S.
Address,
The Secretary.
North of Ireland Family History Society,
c/o Queen's University School of Education,
69 University Street,
Belfast, Northern Ireland,
BT7  1HL.

Are you looking for anyone in particular ?. If so I can have a quick look to see if they are mentioned.

Thanks for your quick reply and explanation Dixie.

No I don't have anyone I need to look up at the moment, at least not at Mallusk as far as I can ascertain - thank you for your offer though - Do N.I.F.H.S publish similar books for other cemeterys?

HistoryTeam.
I'm not a member of N.I.F.H.S., so don't know a lot abut their publications. Went into their website to see what they had on offer, not a lot, but there may be more than they have listed on their site.
www.nifhs.org.

Ulster Historical Foundation publish a lot of material about all aspects of genealogy, including a lot of books on headstone inscriptions.

A link to their books.

Booksulster in Bangor, Co Down, carry a wide range of second hand and new books. Worth a visit
