Can anyone tell me if its true that the microfiche of the parish registers, which were at the Colchester record office, are now being transferred to Colchester library.

Hi Sue
Well I would assume this is the case, can't think of anywhere else they might go, try sending them an email at Essex, might save you a wasted journey

Hallo Sue,

Also pasted from the Essex RO website:

"The Colchester and North East Essex Branch Office is now closed.

The Branch office closed at the end of March 2007.

The archival documents are now being transferred to the Essex Record Office at Wharf Road, Chelmsford, where they are expected to be available from 16th April onwards.

Please note that the Essex Record Office at Chelmsford will be closed from Tuesday 10th April to Saturday 14th April in order to undertake this move as quickly possible. More information about this temporary closure may be found on the front page of the Archives and Museums pages of this website. It is not necessary to book seats in the Searchroom at Chelmsford, but, for an initial period, users are advised to phone 01245 244640 or email ero.enquiry@essexcc.gov.uk if they wish to see material formerly at Colchester, to avoid delay in retrieving it. The microfilm and microfiche at present on open access in the Searchroom at the Branch will be transferred to Colchester Library, where it will be available from 10th April onwards. Copies are already available in the Chelmsford Searchroom. We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused during the transitional period."

I hope this helps

The microfiche cabinet that was in the search room at Colchester Record Office is now in the Local Studies at Cochester library, with the contents still intact. There only 2 microfiche readers though. I used them on Saturday!!!!
Other items may appear in due course.
I think it will be a case of DIY as the staff have never been involved with this before.

       Malcolm.

Hi Malcolm, do  you think they may be getting more readers in? Even Sudbury has three readers in its library.

Hi Sue.

They have a microfilm reader that also takes microfiche & also prints & 2 large microfilm readers. Maybe we should give it a bit of time to get sorted out.
     Better than nothing!!!!!!!!
