Marriage license
« on: Tuesday 10 April 07 12:59 BST (UK) »
Could SKS please tell me how i should go about finding a marriage license?

I have had a very helpful email from a lovely lady who has found a marriage of my 5th gt. Grandfather in 1820 and the marriage was by license. I would very much like to see the license but have no idea how i go about this research. Anyone able to help??

Hi Emma

They are usually with the local diocesan record office so it would depend where the license was granted/where the marriage took place.

Hi Emma,

Do you know where the couple married?  The licence would have been issued by a church authority - it could be the archdeacon, bishop, archbishop of Vicar General.  The location of the records will depend on who issued the licence.

The licence itself is unlikely to exist - but the application or allegation might.  Many have been indexed and the indexes etc are available at either the diocesan or county record office.

Thankyou both for your very speedy replies!

The information i have been given is:

From the Northants Marriage Index

Marriage in Oundle between JONATHAN LEWIN of Clapton and SARAH SOUTHWELL of Oundle on 01 Jun 1820, by license.

The kind lady who gae me this information says i should look to follow this up with a look at the Oundle Parish Register and also by attempting to locate the license.

I think you need to contact Northampton Record Office then.  Oundle is in the Consistory of Peterborough.  They have indexes I believe and my be able to tell you if the index covers these years.
