Baxters in Newton-Stewart. Help please!
« on: Tuesday 10 April 07 15:20 BST (UK) »
This is a bit of a long shot but I wondered if anyone possibly had access to information that could help me.

I'm looking for a branch of my family that moved from the Newton Stewart area to West Yorkshire (most likely huddersfield).

Unfortunately i don't know when this move took place or much else about the branch apart from the surname was Baxter.

Is there any census information that shows a Baxter birthplace as being from this area and living in Yorkshire?

Thanks
Emily :)

Hello Emily

Are we talking 19th century or 20th century here?

If they moved in the 19th century, they would show up on the English censuses but probably as 'born Scotland'. You'd then have to work back and find when they appeared in England and, if your lucky, trace them to an earlier Scottish census or baptism.

Do you have any names, areas, anything at all to go on?

Regards

Hi again

A few more questions:

When do you first find them in West Yorkshire?

How did you find out about them?

These might help to pin them down. It's always best to work backwards from the most recent information, so the West Yorks info is the first part to pin down.

Hello again

i've found one possible Yorkshire family on the 1891 in Kildale, Yorkshire. This is in the Cleveland area (North Yorks) but here are the details:

Kildale RG12 Piece 4022 Folio 5  Page 3

Hall Farm

John Baxter, 48, Farmer,
Margret, wife, 46
George, son, 24,
Isabella, dau, 20
Joseph, son, 16
Francis, son, 12,       )
Maggie, dau, 6,        )
Jane Ann, dau, 4,     )All born Kildale, Yorks
Emily Agnes, dau, 2, )

The parents and older children are all born 'Scotland'. It is possibly them but more searching will be required. I'm away for a few days so unfortunately, i won't be able to help much more for a while.

I hope someone else will pick up on this.

Regards
