Jan,

I wonder if the postcard ever reached it's destination ?

It was addressed to the farm at "Nedderton, Newcastle on Tyne".  Nedderton (sometimes Netherton) lay about a mile west of Bedlington town, about 11 miles north of Newcastle!

Bit early for that era, I'm afraid!

I finally worked out how to find info on the collection and this postcard is described thus:

Limehouse Reach, Chatham.
Postcard photograph entitled View from Sun Pier, Chatham comprising scene looking west from Sun Pier towards Chatham Intra and Rochester showing in foreground Borough of Chatham public swimming raft, attendant and rowing boats, in middle-ground group of lighters, brigantines, steam cargo ship and of spritsail sailing barge, in middle distance group of spritsail sailing barges and in distance left to right, Ship Pier, wharves, Chatham Goods Depot and steam cargo ship and in distance Rochester, Rochester Castle keep and Rochester Cathedral. On rear, message from Janet [-] to Master James (Jim) Liddell, Hall Farm, Nedderton, Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, mentioning German air raid on Royal Naval Barracks [cf. HMS Pembroke], Chatham [cf. Gillingham] on night of ¾ September 1917. Published by H. Brothers. Postmarked Snodland 13 September 1917. p.17 (L)

Quite informative!

Hello

Not so that it was too early for my Dad! As guru Mike says, Netherton and Nedderton are one and the same place. The pit and colliery were known as Netherton and the rest of the village Nedderton. Hall Farm was on a slight hill and there was also a Hall Pit (I have a little book about Netherton/Nedderton). The book mentions Liddells selling milk all over Bedlington and I am sure Michael will chip in as, at the other end of Bedlington (just outside near Bebside) was a Liddel's farm on which my Dad's cousin worked as a milk man!

Cheers,  Anne

The site  communities.northumberland.gov.uk includes the a-z of Nedderton, including wee history, great old photos ( of the colliery, not the village) and very old maps (in "Plans") and Ordnace Survey, and Land Valuation book and map/1910.

Just for info , my birth-colliery of Bebside was a sort of different category to Nedderton/Netherton.

Before Bebside pit was sunk (1850s) there was nothing on the site, other than a farm and an inn. Then the mining community grew up surrounding the farm buildings and inn.

Before Netherton pit was sunk, the village had predated it.

Back to the farm in the midst of Bebside colliery village... us natives called it Liddell's Farm, and the farmer was James Liddell... he had a son called Jimmie ( born c1939).

Sooo....could 'Master Jim' be James the farmer? Given that the postcard was sent in 1917.

(Glad someone is able to make a connection!)
