MEDHURST - Medway
« on: Wednesday 11 April 07 19:01 BST (UK) »
I have found the following children born to Thomas and Elizabeth MEDHURST in the Medway area:

Mary Ann      dob 8 May 1801     bap 5 Jul 1801   Gillingham
Robert John                               bap 22 Dec 1805 St Margaret, Rochester
Walter          dob 12 Feb 1806   bap 23 Mar 1806 Gillingham
Richard Fleet dob 7 May 1807    bap 5 Jul 1807    St Mary, Chatham
Ann               dob 19 Sep1808    bap 6 Nov 1808  Gillingham
Mary Ann                                    bap 19 Apr 1809  St Mary, Chatham
Frances Sarah                            bap 16 Jan 1811  St Mary, Chatham
Thomas        dob 19 Jan 1813    bap 7 Mar 1813   Bethel Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester
Ellen             dob 16 Feb 1815   bap  2 Apr 1815  Bethal Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester
Ellen                                           bap 12 Jun 1816  St Mary, Chatham
Thomas                                      bap 12 Jun 1816  St Mary, Chatham
William Oliver                             bap 15 Aug 1818  Bethel Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester
William Oliver dob 1 Jan 1818    bap 31 Dec 1819  St Mary, Chatham
Elizabeth Ann                             bap 26 Apr 1820  St Mary, Chatham
Mary Ann                                    bap 4 Aug 1822   St Mary, Chatham

The children baptised at the Bethel Wesleyan Chapel appear to have been baptised twice!

I'd value your opinion - are these children all the offspring of one couple?  Ann and Mary look a bit close for comfort but perhaps it's another double baptism.

If there are 2 couples called Thomas & Elizabeth MEDHURST then that poses another dilemma - I haven't been able to find one marriage in the Medway area.  However there is a marriage for a Thomas MEDHURST to Elizabeth CARPENTER at St George's, Gravesend on 23 Sep 1805 but this could be too late if they are the parents of the first 2 children.

Looking at the list, I would rather favour that there are at least two separate families there :-\

Mary Ann      dob 8 May 1801     bap 5 Jul 1801   Gillingham
Robert John                               bap 22 Dec 1805 St Margaret, Rochester
Walter          dob 12 Feb 1806   bap 23 Mar 1806 Gillingham
Richard Fleet dob 7 May 1807    bap 5 Jul 1807    St Mary, Chatham
Ann               dob 19 Sep1808    bap 6 Nov 1808  Gillingham
Mary Ann                                    bap 19 Apr 1809  St Mary, Chatham
Frances Sarah                            bap 16 Jan 1811  St Mary, Chatham
Thomas        dob 19 Jan 1813    bap 7 Mar 1813   Bethel Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester
Ellen             dob 16 Feb 1815   bap   2 Apr 1815  Bethal Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester
Ellen                                           bap 12 Jun 1816  St Mary, Chatham
Thomas                                      bap 12 Jun 1816  St Mary, Chatham
William Oliver                             bap 15 Aug 1818  Bethel Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester
William Oliver dob 1 Jan 1818    bap 31 Dec 1819  St Mary, Chatham
Elizabeth Ann                             bap 26 Apr 1820  St Mary, Chatham
Mary Ann                                    bap 4 Aug 1822   St Mary, Chatham

then who knows :-\

Have you had any success with any burials?  Do the later (post 1813) baptisms have the same abode and occupation for the father?

I know that Frances' father was a officer at Chatham Dockyard.
William Oliver's father was a Quarterman - a shipwright foreman, presumably
at Chatham Dockyard.

I have not found any burials for children, the only burial I have found  is for Thomas MEDHURST at the Bethel Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester on 16 Mar 1829 aged 43years.

Just wondered if your Bayly family came from Deal or Folkstone 1800 - 1900

No, my BAYLY family came from Staplehurst.  Although the spelling is the same, I haven't been able to find any connection to the Deal/Folkestone families.

I also have a Herbert William George Medhurst, who I can trace back to a William  b 1817 Chatham, 1851 living at Jenkins Dale, Chatham, married to Sarah b 1818 Rochester.

Could it be the same family?

He could be the William born 1 Jan 1818.

Do you have the marriage certificate for William & Sarah? - It would give his father.
