Tracing James Edward Fewkes
« on: Thursday 12 April 07 00:54 BST (UK) »
We want to obtain further information concerning James Edward Fewkes, who served in India and married Elizabeth Deonis in Madras in 1874.  It looks like he was from Leicestershire, possibly James Edward Ayre Fewkes, christened Whitwick 13/2/1854.

James Edward Ayre Fewkes has quite a history available on Family Search and ancestry.com

We are trying to tie it all together and would greatly appreciate any specific directions that could be provided for enable us to obtain view records/obtain certificates in this regard.

Photograph of our James Edward Fewkes is attached.

I have also posted this query on the Armed Forced board but no replies yet.

Thanks for reading!!

Hi there,
Was just looking at the 1854 Whitwick James Fewkes through the censuses.
FamilySearch has him as the son of Edward and Rebecca and I can see them together in 1861 and 1871 in Whitwick.  Ancestry doesn't bring him up for 1881 on a simple search, but in 1891 James Fewkes is in Whitwick, still a collier, as he was in 1871, living with his mother Rebecca and listed as single.   In 1901 he's still in Whitwick.

This leads me to suspect that this is not your man.

What else do you have on your James Edward Fewkes?

sorry!!
Louise

I have been looking for offspring from their marriage. But can find no little Fewkes born in India on the census for 81,91 or 01 living in England.
Or find the two of them?
sorry
Jane

Thanks Jane and Icsnor for your comments.

I too have traced James Edward through the census in England, and found the same.

He is not registered in England in 1881 (could have been in India?) but does return 1891 (perhaps completed time in India).

Two children born to James and Elizabeth in India remained in India -  William Henry Leopold and Marjorie Regina.  Possibly the marriage split, James went back to England, Elizabeth stayed in India???

My wife is the great grand child of James Edward.  Family remained in India until 1971 when they moved to Australia.

I have most details but not dates and records concerning James Edward Fewkes' marriage and children.  As stated, I also need to tie up who exactly James Edward was.

Cheers
