Hi Folks,
Greetings from Toronto, Canada.
Is anybody researching the family of my ancestor, John MAYO (1723 -
?) of Frome St. Quintin and, later, Cattistock, Dorset?
John MAYO, son of Clement MAYO and Mary STURMY, baptized in 1723; in 1748, in Melbury Sampford, John married Jane SHERRING of Frome St. Quintin; John and Jane lived in Frome St. Quintin, till about 1762, and then in Cattistock, Dorset; Jane died at her abode in Cattistock and was buried in Frome St. Quintin in 1801; John and Jane had issue:
1. Elizabeth MAYO, baptized in Frome St. Quintin in 1749; in 1772, in Cattistock, Elizabeth MAYO married William FORSE, yeoman, by licence; they lived in Cattistock; Elizabeth was buried there in 1831 and William in 1816; they had issue;
2. Mary MAYO, baptized in Frome St. Quintin in 1750; in 1787, in West Chelborough, Dorset, Mary married James BAKER;
3. William MAYO, baptized in 1753, in Frome St. Quintin, Dorset; William MAYO “of Fryer Wadden in Portisham”, Dorset, married Sarah BIRT (1777 – 1809) in Tarrant Hinton, Dorset, England, in 1798, in the presence of William BIRT and John HILL. Sarah was the daughter of William and Mary (nee JENKINS) BIRT, of Tarrant Hinton, baptized there in 1777. William and Sarah MAYO raised five known sons in Friar Waddon, Dorset, detailed in an earlier posting of mine on Rootschat.
4. Jenny MAYO, baptized in Frome St. Quintin in 1759; Jane probably married Matthew PEACH and they had issue;
5. Anne MAYO, baptized in Frome St. Quintin in 1761; Anne MAYO, married, by licence, at Cattistock, in 1789 (Dorset Marriage Index), Sydnam Burgh or Burch or Birch of Batcombe; Sydenham was buried in 1832 in Holy Trinity, Chilfrome, Dorset; Ann was buried there in 1843; Sydenham and Anne had issue;
6. John MAYO, baptized in Cattistock, Dorset, in 1763; in 1792, in Cattistock, John married, by licence, Ann BUDDEN, who had been born in Dorset about 1765; they lived in West Chelborough, Dorset, where their children were born; later, they probably moved to Rampisham, Dorset; John 79 was buried in Rampisham, Dorset, in 1839 and Ann 80 in 1845; John and Ann had issue.
I am keen to contact any researcher of this MAYO family and to share family history research notes.
Best wishes.
Peter Ferreira.
