Back to your McCullys...I have found them in Durham England in the 1851 Census:

James McCully    49, glass maker, b. Scotland (?)
Ann McCully    49, b. Durham
Elizabeth McCully 15, b. Smithwick, Staffs
Robert McCully    9, b. Scotland

I'll have a look under Urwin for John's details if they show.

There is a John Robson showing on the 1851 Census in England, with parents John and Eleanor. Could they be in England, everyone showing as born in Durham apart from John Snr.:

John Robson    43, coal miner, b. Northumberland
Eleanor Robson    42
John Robson    13, b. B(r)ighton/Durham
William Robson    10
Eleanor Robson    8
George Kent    21, lodger, coal miner

Do you have anything that shows your John as born in Scotland?

Jumping back to your McCully....that entry in England that shows James as born in Scotland got me thinking...... ::)

In the 1841 Census, there is a John between 1812-16 (with the rounding down for that census) born in the county of Dunbartonshire. I wondered whether thiscould be a brother to James.

Looking at the naming order of James and Ann's children, their first born child was called Arthur, which if they were following Scottish naming pattern would normally imply that this would be James's father's name. This name looks to be important given that it looks likely that the first born Arthur died and they used the name again shortly after.

Whilst I cannot find a likely birth entry of a James McCully to a father Arthur at the moment, I have found a possibility for (brother?) John McCully on IGI:

JOHN MCCULLY  Birth: 09 MAY 1813  Christening: 23 MAY 1813  Dumbarton, Dunbarton, Scotland
Parents: Father: ARTHUR MCCULLY Mother: ELIZABETH DUMBAR

Maybe something to work on...

Regards.

Monica

You can tell I'm warming up on the naming pattern  8)  This looks a likely entry for Ann Hartley on IGI:

ANN HARTLEY  Birth:  29 DEC 1801/ Christening: 24 JAN 1802 Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England
Parents: Father: ABRAHAM HARTLEY Mother: MARY SKED

Hello Monice
Going back to John Robson I have no proof John was born in Scotland it is mainly a last resort as I have checked all the John Robson Registration in Durham and Northumberland with parents John Robson a Joiner and Eleanor Urwin and also there is no baptism, John was one of 12 children born to this family and he was the 6th child born I have the Baptism and Registrations of all the others except John its very rare for a child to be neither Registered or Baptised.
on the McCullys your are right there was an Arthur McCully born 1776 but no luck as we think he may have been born in Ireland.

Allan
