John Lee of Staveley
« on: Saturday 14 April 07 14:58 BST (UK) »
Hiya, i am having real trouble finding my 3x gt grandfather, John Lee. I have the census records for him from when he was married, so thats 1881, 91 and 01. But i cannot find him with his parents in the 51/61 census.

He was born about 1852 in Staveley and i know that his father is William Lee from his marriage certificate. Does anyone have the baptism records for Staveley at all and would be willing to do a look up for me to find it?

Thanks,
Ally.

Hi Ally,

Does it give an occupation for William?

I can see 2 William LEEs in Staveley in 1851, one a coal miner and one a Farmer & Publican, wife Ann, with a 4 months old son John. The latter William is widowed by 1861 and there's a possible John Lee age 10 born Staveley boarding in Newbold (RG9/2530 64 27)

Hi,

Sorry, i thought i had the certificate but i havent, I have taken the marriage from the IGI so therefore i dont know the occupation of William. I think i will buy it though so that i can at least try to narrow that down. If i cant locate a baptism then i think that might be the only way of solving this puzzle.

Ally.

There is a John Lee born in Staveley who was boarder in Lancashire in 1871.  There is a ink spot or something directly over the age so Ancestry have not indexed the age at all so presumably it would be missed from any search including age.  If you look carefully it could be "20".   :-\

Hi all, thanks for all your help. I got the marriage certificate for John and his father was a miner. I have found William Lee living in Staveley, that was born in Pinxton, and his wife, A Lee, was born in Heanor. John moved to Stoneyford, which is near Heanor, when he married. And also, John's wife, Georgina Hicking, was from Codnor, also near Heanor. So, i think i have the parents for John now, it all fits in perfectly.

I would still like to find a baptism for him, its definately not the one born in 1850, but im happy with finding his parents at long last.

Thanks again,
Ally.  :D
