In 1901, they were in Crossmichael:

863 ED 3  Page  1

Birkhill

John Smith, 47,  Farm Manager, b. Minnigaff
Mary, 45, b. Penningham, Wigtownshire
John, 23, ploughman on farm, b. Minnigaff

No other JSs b. Minnigaff in 1854-ish

Interestingly, Mary seems to have changed her place of birth from Ayrshire (1881 and 1891) to Penningham  ???

Right - found it

He died 1st Jan 1924, widower of Mary Donaldson. Farmer, retrd. aged 69.

parents - John Smith, cattle dealer, dec. and Mary, M.S. Milligan, dec.

Informant - Richard johnston, son in law.

So, no further forward except that  we now know that Mary Milligan died before 1924.

 ??? ??? ???

It looks as if he died 'in River Dee' normal residence Ringford  :( (?). He mst have drowned - no info in cause - see Register of corrected entries - vol 2 or 7 page 83. January  10th 1924.  :(

The Mary Milligan who's parents were Archibald Milligan and Janet Gordon, died in 1908, Balmaclellan. She was a the widow of a David Johnstone, gamekeeper. Infomant a John Johnstone, son. So I  think that one is ruled out  :(

Unless  :-\ - I think it might be worth you chasing this up.
