What censuses do you have him in? For instance, do you have him after 1861? I searched for all Solomon Given deaths in Scotland but as you said, none of them match up age-wise.

I HAVE him on the 1861 census aged 39  can't find him on the 1871
I CAN FIND THEIR MARRIAGE BANNS BUT NO DEATHS
I AM NOT SURE IF HE IS THE SAME PERSON ON THE 1841 CENSUS BECAUSE THE AGE DOESN'T FIT

I agree couldn't find him after the 1861,

Did find death of Agnes Given Daughter of Solomon and Agnes Given aged 13 years in 1860 I am afraid the image is not great and I could not decipher the date...

Could they have returned to Ireland?

best wishes

Hi Elaine

Just a thought. Is this son Solomon's wedding:

SOLOMON GIVEN   Marriage: 18 DEC 1871 Dundee, Angus, Scotland

If you have viewed, does it show father as alive or deceased. Sometimes when you are trying to narrow down when somebody died, you can get confirmation from their children's marriage cert.

...May not take you much further given that Solomon's death entry in not showing in Scotland but at least it will give you a narrower window to look for elsewhere.

Regards.

Monica  :)

Just had a look at the 1841 Census entry for Soloman in Port Glasgow. I would say, Elaine, it's very likely him by the look of it with his parents Soloman and Ruth and siblings, all showing as born in Ireland.

Just in case you are not aware of this point on the 1841 Census, ages for everyone over the age of 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest five years. Children under 15 are supposed to show their actual age. In this case, Soloman showing birth year 1826 would indicate a birth year of between 1822-26.

Given that he married Agnes in 1843 in Port Glasgow, it further add to likelyhood to you have the right Soloman with his family.

Regards.

I can never leave things alone lol....

Marriage of Solomon Given to Flora Cameron 18th December 1871 in Dundee. both aged 24.  Flora was a widow (ROBERT MUNDY Iron Fitter)

Father of Solomon - Solomon Given  Stoker on a Steam boat
Mother of Solomon - Agnes Given nee Wyllie

Father of Flora - Donald Cameron Ropespinner Joiner
Mother of Flora - Elizabeth Cameron nee Adams

Looks like both parents were alive therefore in 1871

Best wishes
